Misleading News in Race for Attention Is a Threat to Democracy: CPR Rajat Bansal

At Raipur Press Club’s ‘Hamar Pahuna’ programme, Bansal stresses responsible journalism and factual reporting in the digital age

Raipur, July 9: Amid the rapidly evolving media landscape, Chhattisgarh Public Relations Commissioner Rajat Bansal on Thursday expressed concern over the growing trend of misleading news driven by the race for online attention, saying it poses a serious challenge to both democracy and society.

Speaking at the Raipur Press Club’s Hamar Pahuna interactive programme, Bansal said that in the era of social media and instant information, fact-based, balanced and responsible journalism remains the greatest strength of the media.

“The increasing spread of misleading content in the pursuit of attention is a matter of concern for democracy. The credibility of journalism depends on accuracy, responsibility and public trust,” he said.

The event was also attended by Sambit Mishra, who joined journalists in discussions on the changing media ecosystem and the role of public communication.

Senior journalists participating in the programme underlined the need for stronger coordination, greater transparency and continuous dialogue between the media and the Public Relations Department, stating that such engagement is essential for strengthening democratic institutions.

The discussion also focused on the challenges facing modern journalism, the growing menace of misinformation, the importance of ethical reporting, and the future development of the Raipur Press Club. Journalists and office-bearers of the Press Club participated in the interactive session.
